Haines was a Doberman owner, exhibitor, handler, and breeder in the late 1950s-1960s through his Michigan kennel, Checkmate Kennels and co-breeder/co-owner Jack F. Hronek. The Thomas M. The George Shepherd Page papers include the records of the Page family's kennel, Dunrobin Kennels, which includes some of the first Scottish Deerhounds in America.
