From the Series:

Realia and Art includes a variety of three dimensional items representing and honoring Doberman Pinschers. There are several statues and book plates, club posters, pins, medallions, and works of art in sculpture and watercolors. Items of particular interest include a set of ear clamps from around 1980, and a print depicting the dog market in Apolda, Germany, where Doberman Pinschers originated.

Historical Note

This print of an illustration, titled Dog Market in Apolda, depicts an annual public dog market in the German town of Apolda. It was originally published in Die Gartenlaube, the first successful German mass-circulated periodical, issue 25, page 415. The publication was intended for family entertainment and included short stories, essays, current events, poems, and full-page illustrations. The origin and date of printing of this particular print is unknown. A notation in pencil, "Animals 1887," is on the bottom right corner of the print. On verso, Ann Lanier, who donated the item to the DPCA Archives, states "text from Howell's The Complete Doberman, original from book Animals 1887 in German."
