Article, from Life magazine, "Jumping Dog", c. 1943-1945
Scope and Contents
Dr. Jacqueline C. Harris's collection of Siberian Husky materials includes original art, prints, publications, and scrapbooks. Her scrapbooks consist of collected ephemera and clippings with the themes of Siberian Huskies, Arctic exploration, sled dog races including the Iditarod, and advertisements featuring Huskies and other dog breeds. Notably, one scrapbook includes several pages of cigarette cards featuring images of various dog breeds. The publications series includes dog-themed comic books and calendars; one 1932 calendar features an original painted cover titled, "Sir Wilfred Grenfell on Board Strahcoma," and is signed. Other publications include programs, brochures, and articles regarding sled dog racing. A pack of playing cards featuring Siberian Huskies and a pack of collector cards featuring Iditarod racers and dogs round out this series. Harris's collection also contains some beautiful original art, such as drawings, handmade cards, paintings, and even stained glass. Artists include Carol Snow, Ginger Dunlap, R.H. (Rachel) Badeau, and others. Also impressive is Harris's collection of posters and prints, including several by Jon Van Zyle featuring Iditarod and Alaska themes. Several are signed by sled dog mushers or artists.
