The Complete Dog Book records, 1902-2003
Scope and Contents
This collection contains documents assembled by AKC Library staff into files on each AKC recognized breed and was chiefly to track the establishment and revision of breed standards. This information is directly recorded by AKC notices, AKC Gazette Secretary’s Pages, and handwritten draft revisions submitted by clubs, but files may also include photographs of representative types; correspondence with clubs and fanciers (both American and international), newspaper clippings, and other articles regarding the breeds’ origins and development; and handwritten and typed librarian research notes with information, such as the first appearance of the dog in the AKC Stud Book. Often these documents were submitted to AKC during preparation of new editions of the AKC’s Complete Dog Book (previously Pre Bred Dogs), and an additional box of images sent by clubs for publication in the 1968 edition. Select correspondence and images concerns breeds before they were recognized by the AKC.
