Biographical / Historical

Dr. Wolfgang A. Casper (1901-1982) was a Sporting Group judge and Irish Setter owner, exhibitor, handler, and breeder under the name Wolfscroft Kennel, with a particular interest in obedience. Born in Germany, he graduated from Berlin University School of Medicine and became a dermatologist. He came to New York in 1934 and taught at the New York University Medical School. Dr. Casper was an officer in the U.S. Public Service from 1942-1946, after which he practiced dermatology and founded a dermatology clinic at St. Vincent's Medical Center on Staten Island. He died March 22, 1982 at age 81.

Dr. Casper's hobbies included Irish Setters and photography, with his Irish Setters often serving as subjects. In addition to breeding and judging, Dr. Casper served as president of the Eastern Irish Setter Association, chairman of the Combined Setter Clubs Shows, chairman of the Staten Island Companion Dog Training Club, a member of the Associatin of Obedience Clubs, and AKC delegate of the Staten Island Kennel Club.

Lillian Tiffany (also known as Lillian Tiffany Rose, Mrs. Durant Rose) (1900-1967) was an artist, mainly of canine portraiture and sketches. Known for her meticulous and realistic drawings and paintings, Tiffany's work can often be found for sale at auctions today. Born to American parents spending the summer abroad in England, Tiffany was raised in Washington, D.C. by a grandmother. Due to frailty, Tiffany did not socialize with other children and was privately tutored, resulting in close relationships with her dog companions. In her lifetime, Tiffany owned a variety of dog breeds, including an Irish Setter, Pekingese, French poodle, Yorkshire Terrier, Skye Terrier, and Bulldog. Tiffany turned to breeding and shows after her Skye Terrier, Pamela's, success in the ring, including Best of Breed at the Rhode Island Kennel Club. She also became qualified to judge Schipperke conformation.

Tiffany's artistic skills manifested early, sketching various animals before her teen years. She later studied at the Art Students League of New York with George B. Bridgman and with Raymond Neilson at the National Academy of Design. Tiffany and her husband, Timbrell Durant ("Durant") Rose, lived on their estate in New City, New York, and were well connected in East Coast social circles. They are buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
