Faye Bergman collection of Boxer photographs
Scope and Contents Note
The collection consists of 26 black-and-white photos assembled by Faye Bergman documenting her activities as a Boxer breeder and show judge in the 1940s through 1960s, a period considered a golden era for the breed. Bergman and her husband Jim owned and operated the successful Jamaye Kennels in El Monte, California. The majority of photographs were shot by famous West Coast show photographer Joan Ludwig, with a few by Deo Paul. Many feature well-known handler George Sangster (1918-?), including a fine portrait by Ludwig and rare shot of him showing alongside brother Harry Sangster (1911-1966). Win shots are from the San Gabriel Valley Kennel Club, San Diego Kennel Club, Boxer Club of California, Midwest Boxer Club and other specialty shows. Also present are win shots and candids of Bergman herself judging Boxer competitions, footage of Jamaye Kennels in the late 1940s, individual dog portraits, and more whimsically toned shots of Boxer puppies. Captions on the verso varyingly identify dog, show, handler, judge, and year.
