Biographical note

Meander Kennels was established in 1928 in Locust Dale, Virginia by sisters Julia and Judith Shearer. The Shearer sisters were equally well-known for their thoroughbred racehorses and cattle, even owning their own family pack of foxhounds. They imported British foundation stock and experienced great success in the ring ("a force to be reckoned with") well into the 1960s. Champion Mica of Meander essentially became the blueprint for the first breed standard of the American Whippet Club, which was run by the Shearer sisters for many years. The last of their approximately 150 homebred Whippet litters was born in early 1970s. Judith died in 1970, and Julia two years later. Numerous Whippet breeders still carry on Meander ideals into the present.
