Dr. Braxton Sawyer (1911-1982) was an equally reknowned as a theologian and dog man. Born In Cullman County, Alabama Sawyer joined the ministry in 1933 and soon began preaching revivals, ultimately enrolling in the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary of Louisville, Kentucky. After leading several churches throughout the South in 1951 he resigned to found the Radio Pulpit, a radio evangelistic ministry which lasted over 25 years.

In 1930 he spent the wages from his first paycheck to purchase an American Foxhound bitch. He diligently read Dr. Misch Casper in “The Hunter’s Horn magazine”,” and in 1943 visited his first bench show and discovered the hobby that would consume him the rest of his life. He established Kentucky Lake Kennels, which produced at least four National Bench Foxhound champions; joined the Fort Smith Kennel Club in 1950; and took his first Best in Show in 1963. Sawyer ultimately became a well-known judge of Sporting and Hound breeds and international lecturer on dog breeding based on genetics studies. It has been said that more than 8,000 puppies were whelped in his kennels, including in addition to American Foxhounds – Bassets, Beagles, English Foxhounds, Coonhounds, Norwegian Elkhounds, Pointers, English Setters, Weimaraners, and more.
