Margaurite and Kenneth M. McDonald collection of dog show photography

 Collection
Identifier: AKV-1-9

Scope and Contents

Spanning the late-1940s through the 1970s, this collection chronicles the lifelong careers in the sport of Margaurite and Kenneth M. McDonald. The photographs are divided into four categories: portraits and candids of the McDonalds, their kennel, and their dogs (English Cocker and English Springer Spaniels), win shots from the McDonalds' careers as handlers and exhibitors (strictly Spaniels), win shots featuring Margaurite McDonald as judge, and win shots featuring Kenneth M. McDonald as Judge. The collection also includes numerous Certificates of Litter Registration, Certificates of Registration, and pedigrees, mostly for dogs bred by the McDonalds. There is a small amount of dog-related correspondence, contracts, and judging guidelines.

While they both eventually served as all-breed judges, as represented by the images, Margaurite chiefly judged Toy and Sporting Groups while Kenneth more regularly specialized in Non-Sporting and Working dogs. Most of the shows depicted in the collection are West Coast based. There are many win shots by esteemed dog show photographer Joan Ludwig, who also captured several of the Kay Emm dogs in portrait.

Biographical note

Margaurite and Kenneth "Mac" McDonald devoted their lives to the sport of the purebreed dog, as breeders, professional handlers, and, ultimately, judges. Based in Redondo Beach, California, they bred and showed many top winning English Cocker and English Springer Spaniels under the prefix Kay Emm, including Ch. Kay Emm's Rob Roy's Anbet of Pan, Ch. Kay Emm's Flashing Caballero, and Ch. Kay Emm's Flashing Challenge. Kenneth received all-breed status as a judge in 1968, as did Margaurite sometime after his death in 1973.
