Scope and Contents

Files are composed of a wide range of materials collected by or submitted to the AKC Library & Archives. They primarily consist of correspondence between club or breed representatives and AKC executives or departments, as well as internal memoranda. Topics include breed recognition, club establishment, revisions to breed standards or classifications, and matters related to breed stud books, registration of foundation stock, and judge education.

Also frequently present are parent and regional breed club materials, such as constitutions, bylaws, membership lists, illustrated breed standards, distribution materials, meeting minutes, and other administrative documents. Additional materials may include breed histories, pedigrees, pamphlets, small books, ephemera (such as stud cards and holiday cards), small artwork, candid photographs, and show materials.

Access may be subject to the approval of the Archivist and/or Executive Secretary, particularly for internal AKC records.

Arrangement

Materials are arranged alphabetically by recognized breed or club name, followed by series representing AKC Groups (Terrier, Hound, Sporting, Non-Sporting, Working, Herding, and Toy), Sporting/Working types (e.g., Spaniels, Retrievers), Miscellaneous Class breeds, and Foundation Stock Service breeds. A final series, titled “Unrecognized Breeds and Miscellaneous Correspondence,” contains materials that do not fit into the aforementioned categories. Within each category, files are arranged alphabetically by breed name. Oversized materials are housed separately in two boxes, with cross-reference notes provided in the main files.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Dates and internal sources of transfer to the AKC Archives are often unrecorded, though it appears an executive or other authority selected the files for preservation. When known, the creator/compiler of the files is noted on the outside of the file folder.
