Biographical / Historical

Hugh J. Chisholm, III was born in 1913 in New York, the oldest of three children to Hugh J. Chisholm, Jr. and wife Sara. The Chisholm family's wealth was established by Hugh J. Chisholm, Sr., who founded the Oxford Paper Company and was a prominent citizen in New York and Maine. The family owned Strathglass Estate in Westchester County, named by Chisholm, Jr. after the family's Scottish homeland, where they raised cattle and Sara raised poodles. Chisholm III graduated as class poet from Yale in 1936, studied at King's College in Cambridge, and served in World War II. He became a poet and translater, and along with wife Rosemary ("Rosie"), became an owner and breeder of Welsh Terriers under the name Strathglass Kennel and hosted specialty shows on their estate in Port Chester, New York. Strathglass Welsh Terriers were very successful in the show ring, taking the Terrier Group at Westminster Kennel Club's annual show in 1952 and 1959. Chisholm III was active in the Welsh Terrier Club of America and the Westchester Kennel Club, serving as a delegate to the American Kennel Club. He died in an automobile accident in France in 1972.

Both books include pedigrees, show records, and ownership information for Welsh Terriers between the mid 1930s and 1960. Book Three consists of Strathglass Kennel breeding records and various lists of breed trophies and awards, Westchester Kennel Club Best in Show winners from 1936 to 1959, veterinarian and photographer contacts, British Welsh Terrier kennels, breed standard, Welsh Terrier Club of America members (1959), and judges. Calculated breeding statistics for Strathglass Kennel and name lists follow at the end of the book.
