Haines was a Doberman owner, exhibitor, handler, and breeder in the late 1950s-1960s through his Michigan kennel, Checkmate Kennels and co-breeder/co-owner Jack F. Hronek. Cherloc v. Raufelsen and Ch. Assy von Illerblick, and produced many champions as a breeder. Carpenter also wrote educational articles on Dobermans and was active in the DPCA and as a judge.
